Low-Code: Simplified software development?

Low-Code platforms seek to speed up the development of applications in the same way that web design tools like WordPress manage to speed up the process of designing and creating a website.

The need for digital services is growing very quickly all over the world and its users continually demand new designs and functionalities that organizations must be able to develop and put into production in an agile way while maintaining quality standards.

Low-Code is a technological trend that is on the rise due to its scalability and the great possibilities it offers, guaranteeing organizations the possibility of continuing to grow, increasing their number of processes and updating those that already existed. But, in order to talk about its benefits, application areas and more, we must first understand what Low-Code is and why it is so popular.

What is Low Code?

It is a software development approach that aims to make software development fast and easy. To do this, it opts for visual and intuitive tools such as the "drag and drop" functionality, reducing programming to a minimum.
To achieve their goals, Low-Code platforms provide a wide variety of preconfigured functionalities, components, and services that make it easy to represent and configure business technical specifications (conditions, assignments, loops, etc.) in a way that requires no technical knowledge.

It is important to point out that Low-Code solutions do not replace the IT department, but rather enhance it. The fact of incorporating the user within the development process means that this department now has more resources and that the most qualified personnel can focus on technical aspects related to their knowledge, such as security, scalability or the efficiency of new applications.

The reality of Low-Code solutions

Although it is true that Low-Code solutions are on the rise and many companies are already benefiting from these products, there are still misperceptions about their work methodology and the benefits they provide.

One of the advantages offered by Low-Code is that through these solutions, the IT department can lay the foundations of any project very quickly, focusing more on customization issues, or greater complexity. In addition to the advantage of working with a common base to guarantee the consistency and integration of the system.

Through Low-Code, the code is generated automatically through an intuitive ordering of elements. It also allows that changes can also be easily implemented retrospectively. Other advantages are:

  • Cost reduction: an effect directly related to saving time is cost reduction. The visual elements of Low-Code platforms can be reused and do not need to be redrafted each time.
  • Flexibility: flexible tools allow you to publish the developed applications in the environment of your choice. In addition, the simple handling of the Low-Code platforms gives them great adaptability. In this way, developers can react quickly to changes, such as new market demands.
  • Higher quality: since Low-Code development is also intended for amateur programmers, it offers the possibility of integrating specialized knowledge from different fields into it. In this way, experts from different disciplines can act as citizen developers (non-professional developers) to help find creative solutions, thus favoring the entry of external ideas and increasing the quality of the final product.

How is Low-Code used?

Whether it's a website, mobile app, or desktop tool, with the help of this approach, cross-platform app development is easier than ever. Low-Code is not only used for internal purposes, but also externally. In government, e-commerce, and industry, for example, the rapid development of customer-oriented, plug-and-play software applications has gained many adherents.

While non-programmers are dedicated to developing apps to increase business efficiency, expert programmers use Low-Code platforms to prototype innovative apps. It is also possible to improve the so-called "legacy systems", that is, to adapt existing applications with the Low-Code approach so that they meet the expectations of new customers and the market, as well as to make their use more intuitive.

Many entrepreneurs and bloggers use Low-Code platforms to create their own website. The best known example is, without a doubt, WordPress. In this system, users first choose a template or layout for their page. They can then insert text and different files. Since it is an open source provider, users with programming skills can also view the source code and modify it according to their needs. WordPress is, therefore, a classic example of a Low-Code platform, conceived for both amateur users and professional developers.

In conclusion, Low-Code platforms undoubtedly represent a great help both for companies that have IT equipment, since it facilitates the development of applications, and for those companies that, without having these departments or highly qualified personnel, want to develop custom applications in an agile, fast and intuitive way; although the most advisable thing is to be able to count on a professional development team that can guarantee the security, robustness and reliability of the application you want to develop.
